about the course

This School of Navigation and Seamanship will be a 6-month course designed to train those with little to no knowledge of seamanship to a level of competency that will be valuable aboard small vessels. Students will receive hands-on training by serving as crew onboard a 30 foot sailing vessel. Students will receive classroom instruction and immediately put what they have learned into practice. The course will cover the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Day Skipper theory course with the opportunity to earn RYA Certification.

Training Phase (24 weeks)

Learn the basics of seamanship in a faith inspiring community where God is the center, and the Pacific the playground.

Understand the principles of navigation and seamanship and apply them with confidence while conducting a vessel in a sea-lane. Effectively meet and respond to an emergency understanding Safety of Life at Sea. Work as a team in preventing and responding to an emergency at sea and in port. Navigate a vessel in extreme conditions and situations and identify dangers concerning crew, passengers, cargo, and the ship. Learn the principles of leadership and its disciplines and apply them with an understanding of Biblical principles. Understand the basic principles of Engineering and engine maintenance and operation. Gain confidence in preaching the Gospel and understanding the Biblical perspective of shipping and sea life. Have a world view and international awareness of evangelism by the use of ships.

Sea Time

Upon successful completion of this 24‑week / 24‑credit SONS program (including SONS field experience), there may be opportunities to earn additional sea time by serving aboard one of our Boats in the South Pacific. Should such deployment occur, participants will incur a cost (exact amount to be determined), plus expenses for international health insurance, visa, and travel.
