On the YWAM Liberty, every crew member plays a vital role in keeping the ship moving and the mission alive. One of those faithful volunteers is Fulaiza Edward, who has been with us for almost a year.
Fulaiza serves as a GP Rating 2, part of our maritime crew. He has worked both on deck and in the engine room, carrying out the responsibilities of a deck boy with excellence. Before joining the ship, Fulaiza studied at PNG Maritime College, where he earned his certification that prepared him for a life at sea. But serving with YWAM has given him more than just the chance to grow as a seafarer. It has opened doors to explore passions that go beyond the maritime world.
Alongside his maritime duties, Fulaiza has expressed a growing interest in photography and media. YWAM provides a unique environment where people are encouraged to explore and grow in different areas, even outside their normal roles.
With the support of Garrett Shue (Communications Manager) and Laurel Brunsink (Photographer/Videographer), Fulaiza has had opportunities to step away from deck duties and partner directly with the ship’s Media Team. While on outreach in villages when the ship is anchored or visiting communities, he has been able to join us. Instead of remaining on board for the day, he goes ashore with his camera in hand, walking through villages, collecting stories, and capturing photos just like the rest of the media team.
With mentorship and hands-on practice, Fulaiza has learned how to properly use a DSLR camera and is now able to capture incredible moments that bless the entire ship community and allow us to celebrate the work God is doing.
“As a Mariner, I want to take this time to say thanks to YWAM Ships for giving me the opportunity to take on a new skill in photography. I am thankful to YWAM for the chance to grow in new areas and be a part of the media team.” – Fulaiza Edward
Stories like Fulaiza’s show one of the many things that makes YWAM Ships special. On many ships, a maritime crew member would only ever serve in their assigned department. But at YWAM Ships, individuals are encouraged to step into new areas, discover hidden talents, and grow in ways that impact both the ship and their future.
We are thankful for Fulaiza’s faithful service on deck and inspired by his willingness to learn and step into new opportunities. His story is a reminder that God calls us not only to serve with excellence, but also to embrace new paths He places before us.
