When the YWAM Liberty visits a village in Papua New Guinea, the ship’s team brings a wide range of ministry and services to the people—medical care, eyeglasses, dental care, water purification, Oral Bible Translation, and more. While parents and children receive the physical help and care they need, there’s a ministry that focuses on making sure the other adults and kids have fun and learn about Jesus. That team is known as the Community Engagement team. The team helps everyone learn cheerful songs with dances, watch engaging skits, hear Bible teachings, and then head out to play games!

After the fun activities, there’s also classroom time. Monica Sokina, a local volunteer during Outreach 3, helped out in the Community Engagement team and classroom. She also helped translate for the DTS (Discipleship Training School) students and staff, bridging the language gap from English to Tok Pisin, Papua New Guinea’s local language. In many areas, children don’t have toothbrushes or toothpaste, so Monica and the team distributed these essentials—and even gave a five-minute demonstration on how to use them.
“Seeing the kids brush their teeth with big smiles on their faces—it was such a blessing,” said Monica.
Teaching the kids about hygiene was just one part of the ministry’s impact, the Community Engagement team also brought people together.
“Seeing all the communities come together for Jesus and those kids—it was beautiful,” Monica shared. “It doesn’t happen too often.”
At one point, a DTS student sat down with a guitar and began playing a worship song in Tok Pisin. As soon as the kids heard it, they ran over and started singing along. Soon, everyone had joined in.
“There’s something so special about hearing a foreigner sing in your own language,” Monica said. “The kids were so happy.”
The Community Engagement team shows that every individual is valuable in the Kingdom of God. Thanks to Monica and the Community Engagement team, those people experienced the love of Jesus.
